Description
Kissos is a lovely small village perched at a respectable altitude from which it looks on to Mouresi, Agios Dimitrios, Agios Ioannis and the great expanse of the Aegean Sea. It is virtually hidden in the dense flora of northeastern Pelion as it is located about two km off the main road. The forest all around is dense and in some cases impenetrable. The beauty of the landscape is breathtaking and the views unforgettable. At the central square stands the three-aisled basilica of Agia Marina [Saint Marina], which is one of the most important ecclesiastic monuments on Mount Pelion. Agia Marina is renowned for its history and delightful décor, the high points of which are the gilded, engraved, wooden iconostasis [templum], the exquisite frescos on the walls and the four interior domes and the many Byzantine icons. The church also has a small museum inside where the visitor can admire old ecclesiastic manuscripts and books as well as several hagiographic exhibits.
